Frequently Asked Questions
-
Does UVC light also help against SARS CoV-2?The RNA of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is just as susceptible to UVC radiation as any other microorganism. The dose of radiation is crucial, not the type of organism.
-
What is UV light?Ultraviolet (UV) radiation covers a wavelength range from 100 to 400 nanometers (nm) and is the most energetic part of optical radiation. UV light is classified by wavelength: - UV-A: 320 - 400 nm - UV-B: 290 - 320 nm - UV-C: 100 - 290 nm UV-C radiation from the sun is completely filtered out by the ozone layer around the Earth's atmosphere, so all UV-C radiation found on Earth comes from artificial sources. Learn more what the difference between UV A/B/C is in our blog article.
-
How do germs, such as viruses and bacteria, react to UV light?UV disinfection is effective at wavelengths from 200 nm to 300 nm. The wavelength of the UVC lamps is 254 nm. The UV-C radiation has a strong virucidal and bactericidal effect. It penetrates the cell, destroys the structure of DNA or RNA and thus inactivates living cells. Microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, yeasts and fungi are rendered harmless by the UV radiation within seconds, because they can no longer reproduce.
-
Which viruses and bacteria are rendered harmless by UV light?UVC light can be used to render all microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria or fungi, harmless. The decisive factor is the radiation dose, which depends on the wavelength and the irradiation time.
-
Is UV-C light harmful to humans?Excessive exposure to UV light can cause irritation of the skin (sunburn) and eyes in humans. UVC light is highly energetic and can cause even more severe damage, including skin cancer and blindness. Therefore, the radiation is only used in installed modules or under protective clothing. Our ESCALITE modules are installed in the return flow of the escalator in such a way that no contact between the UV rays and humans is possible. A health risk for humans and animals is thus excluded.
-
What are the advantages of UV disinfection compared to spray or wipe disinfection?Disinfection with UV light takes place without the use of chemical products or wipes and is therefore much more environmentally friendly. With conventional disinfectants also not all areas can be treated, because they are not accessible or too sensitive or must not come into contact with liquids. With UVC light, all areas and materials can be disinfected very quickly.
-
What are the advantages of ESCALITE?Many people shy away from touching the handrails because they suspect many germs on them. And rightly so. However, for safety reasons, you should hold on, because falls on escalators can cause very dangerous injuries. With ESCALITE, 99.99% of pathogens are permanently eliminated from handrails. This gives users a good feeling in terms of hygiene and safety.
-
Is there a minimum or maximum length of the escalators? No. The escalators can be any length, width and depth. This does not matter with our module. We have already equipped many different escalators in the past, such as the escalators in the Europa Passage in Hamburg and the arched escalator in the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
-
How expensive is ESCALITE?The price for the modules and the installation cannot be fixed as a lump sum, since the installation costs of the respective manufacturer or the maintenance company still have to be added. However, you can expect a medium-high 4-digit amount.
-
Does the ESCALITE module have to be renewed at some point? The module itself does not need to be replaced. Only the UVC lamps should be replaced after a running time of approx. 12,000 hours, as the performance then decreases. Then a complete disinfection is no longer given.
-
Can you hear the Escalite module? No, the module does not emit any noise. So there is no acoustic interference.
-
Can the module also be installed in escalators that are outside of a building and not covered? There is a "weatherproof" module especially for escalators that are not covered. The operation is the same and the module is equally effective.
-
Are all parts included to install the module?Yes. With the accessories we provide, our ESCALITE module can be installed by professionals without any delays.
-
How and where is the module installed? To install the ESCALITE module, the escalator must be opened and 3-4 steps removed. The boxes containing the electronic ballasts are mounted on one or two crossbars under the steps and the base bodies are mounted in close proximity to the ballasts on the side of the escalator. Once the module is installed, the escalator can be reassembled and put into operation normally.
-
Who installs the module? The ESCALITE module can be installed by any escalator manufacturer or maintenance company. It can be integrated into new escalators and existing installations.
-
How does ESCALITE work? The handrail of the escalator constantly passes through our built-in ESCALITE module. Three UVC lamps are installed in the reflector, which ensure that the handrail is irradiated from all sides as it passes through the module. The germs are killed within seconds. As the handrail passes through the module again and again, its surface is disinfected 99.99 percent of the time and no more infection can occur via the handrails.
-
Where can I buy the module?Since the ESCALITE must be installed in the escalator, you can only obtain the module from the escalator manufacturer or maintenance company. They will contact us and make you an offer that includes the module and installation. Of course, you can also tell us your service partner and we will take care of getting you a quote.
-
Can UV light damage the handrail?During the development phase of the module, the effect of the UVC light on the handrails was also tested. No damage or changes to the handrails were detected. The tests were carried out in cooperation with one of the largest manufacturers of escalator handrails.
-
Is TiTANO weatherproof?Yes, you can coat surfaces and objects outside. However, the surface should be reasonably dry. Once the coating is dry, the weather and also regular cleaning, which of course should be done as usual, does not pose any restrictions.
-
Can you also apply TiTANO yourself? No, coating is carried out by our hygiene experts using special high-pressure equipment. This ensures that the surfaces have been properly coated.
-
How does TiTANO work? The positively charged surface coated with TiTANO attracts microorganisms and the positive charge alters their outer membrane on contact. The combination of protons and small traces of silver ions irreversibly destroys the cell membrane, causing the microorganism to die.
-
Does the coating need to be renewed? The TiTANO coating should be renewed every 12 months.
-
Do you have to clean the surfaces despite the TiTANO coating?Since TiTANO only minimizes the germ load and does not kill all germs, the surfaces should still be cleaned despite the coating. Dust and other contaminants also accumulate on objects, against which TiTANO is not effective, so the regular cleaning cycle should be maintained.
-
Can I buy TiTANO as a private individual? No. TiTANO is so far only sold to entrepreneurs, i.e. in the sense of §14 BGB (German Civil Code), to natural or legal persons or partnerships with legal capacity, who act in the exercise of their commercial or independent professional activity when concluding a legal transaction. We do not conclude contracts with consumers, in the sense of §13 BGB.
-
What is TiTANO?TiTANO is an antimicrobial coating used to reduce germs of all kinds on any surface. It can be applied to control elements, door handles, railings or even desks, where it continuously acts against germs. The coating is applied to the selected surfaces where it actively reduces yeast, mold, bacteria and viruses, including coronavirus. Spraying the coating can achieve a germ reduction of up to 99.99%.
-
How is TiTANO applied? The coating is applied quickly and efficiently on site by our teams using an electrospray process.
-
Where is TiTANO best used?Everywhere where many people are and touch objects, because one of the main transmission routes for infections are our own hands. This can be in shopping centers, hospitals or supermarkets, and there on surfaces such as railings, door handles, desks or even controls in elevators.
-
How long does it take before you can touch the surfaces again?During coating, the areas must be cordoned off for a certain time. However, the coated areas are freely accessible again after about 30 minutes. How long we need in total depends, of course, on the total size of the area to be coated.
-
Can everyone use UVIS Surface, or do you need training? Before using UVIS Surface (Soluva Zone H), one should read the operating instructions in detail and put on the personal protective equipment - face visor, protective gloves and clothing that covers open skin areas appropriately radiation-proof. After that, everyone should be able to use the device.
-
What do I have to consider when using UVIS Surface in relation to UVC radiation? The UVC unit should never be pointed directly at people, animals or reflective surfaces, as this can actually cause serious damage to skin and eyes. The device should only be operated when the supplied personal protective equipment is put on. However, no damage is to be expected if the device is used properly and an appropriate safety distance is maintained. For further safety instructions, please refer to the operating instructions.
-
When does the lamp have to be replaced? The power of the UV lamps is subject to natural degradation depending on the operating time. We recommend checking the remaining power of the UV lamps at regular intervals using the enclosed test points and the control card (function like dosimeter) and replacing them after 12 months at the latest. If the power falls below the limit value (measured on the test strips), the UV lamp should be replaced.
-
How long do I have to irradiate surfaces with UVIS Surface? With two seconds of irradiation at a distance of five centimeters, a dose of around 25mJ/cm2 is achieved. This would render viruses such as the coronavirus harmless. The test points and the control card can be used to check the necessary distance and the irradiation duration. Further information on the irradiation doses required for disinfection can be found in the operating instructions.
-
How quickly is the UVIS Surface ready for use?During a cold start, it takes approximately 90 seconds for the UV lamp to reach its full UVC output. The device should be operated continuously. Short and frequent on/off cycles reduce the service life of the UV lamp.
-
What can be disinfected with UVIS Surface?Basically, all surfaces can be irradiated, except reflective ones, as this may cause injuries. The use of UVIS Surface (Soluva) is particularly suitable for surfaces that cannot be disinfected with liquids or materials that could be damaged by the chemical composition of the disinfectant. Further information on the irradiation of various surfaces can be found in the operating instructions.
-
Does the UVC radiation affect the materials? The UV radiation used is very high in energy and leads to accelerated aging of many materials - paper, plastics, polymers, general org. compounds as well as many types of color pigments, but not metals and most ceramics. It is recommended to test the compatibility on a material sample.
-
What is the battery life of UVIS Surface? In continuous operation, the battery has an average runtime of about 45 minutes.
-
How is the UVIS Surface user protected from UVC radiation? When using the device, always wear the supplied personal protective equipment and follow the instructions in the operating manual.
-
What distance from the surface must be maintained?During the first applications, the test points with the control card show you which distance and speed is optimal for reliable UV disinfection. After a few applications, you will no longer need the test points to check the effect. Then you will have learned the correct distance and speed so that you won't even have to think about it. You will also find a detailed description in the operating instructions.
-
What happens if you get the radiation on your skin or look into the UV light?Ultraviolet radiation is the high-energy part of optical radiation and is not visible to the human eye. Without protective measures, it damages the skin and eyes and can lead to skin aging and possibly skin cancer in the long term, as well as clouding of the eye lens.
-
Does UVIS Air release any substances?Unlike comparable air purification devices, UVIS Air (Soluva Air T) is completely chemical-free, operates without ozone or other by-products, and is filter-free, eliminating the need for expensive regular filter changes.
-
What fan speeds are there?A total of four levels are available. The fan speed can be regulated by touching the "Fan speed" control element (left) several times.
-
How often must the UVC lamp be replaced? The lamp has a service life of approximately 12,000 hours. When these have elapsed, the lamp should be replaced. The lamp may well still be on, but the radiation strength will then no longer be sufficient to kill the viruses, bacteria or fungal spores present in the air. When the device is switched on, the status display can be seen at the bottom of the UVIS Air touch display. During the warm-up phase of the UV lamp, the status indicator lights up green and then slowly changes to blue. After approximately 5 seconds, the unit is ready for use and the control panel now glows blue. When the status lamp lights up yellow, the operating time of the UV lamp has reached 11,500 hours and is approaching its end. You should then order a new UV lamp immediately. When the status light is purple, the 12,000 hour run time has been reached and the lamp should be replaced.
-
Does UVIS Air need maintenance? The UVIS Air device does not require standard maintenance. It should be cleaned of dust from the outside with a damp cloth at regular intervals.
-
Can the UVC radiation from the UVIS Air device harm me?If the lamp is properly inserted and the unit is closed, no UVC radiation can penetrate to the outside. There is no danger whatsoever. As soon as the top cover is released, the unit also switches off automatically for safety reasons, so that no harmful radiation can be emitted. However, as a precaution, you should always disconnect the power plug before changing the lamp. For more information, please read the operating instructions.
-
What additional functions does UVIS Air have? The additional functions of UVIS Air are operated via the touch display. By touching the "Fan speed" control element several times, you can regulate the fan speed. A total of four levels are available. Depending on the level, the air circulation rate is higher and the fan volume increases slightly. If UVIS Air is to be in operation only intermittently, the operating time can be activated by touching the "Timer" control element. Three operating times are available: 1 h, 4 h, 8 h. After the operating time has elapsed, the device switches off automatically.
-
How does UVIS Air work?UVIS Air (Soluva Air T) immediately destroys the genetic material of bacteria, viruses (also Corona) and other dangerous germs. The air is sucked into the device, disinfected with UV-C light and blown out germ-free. In the process, the air stream forms a bell shape that surrounds the persons and thus protects them from germs. For more information, please read the instructions for use.
-
Which rooms can be disinfected with UVIS Air?UVIS Air (Soluva Air T) can be used to disinfect the air in small rooms up to a maximum of 16 m² and a maximum ceiling height of 2.50 m, such as offices, meeting rooms, treatment rooms, sickrooms and living rooms. The device should be set up on a table in the immediate vicinity of people in order to be able to optimally develop its disinfection effect. If two or more people are sitting at a table, the device should be placed in the middle of the table if possible. If a larger room with many people present is to be disinfected, several UVIS Air units can be set up or a larger unit should be used. If you are interested, please feel free to contact our sales colleagues at info@uv-is.com or use our contact form.
-
How long does UVIS Air run on the power bank? With the power bank, UVIS Air (Soluva Air T) can be operated independently from the mains for approx. two hours. Of course, this depends on the set ventilation level and the remaining capacity of the Powerbank.
-
Can you hear noises when UVIS Air is in operation? The UVIS Air is very quiet during operation. At full speed, it is comparable to a fan. Level "1" reaches 35 decibels and level "2" 38 decibels, which corresponds to rustling leaves. Level "3" at 42 decibels and level "4" at 46 decibels correspond to quiet noises in the home, such as the dishwasher 10 meters away or the washing machine in the next room.
-
Where and how is UVIS Air best used?UVIS Air (Soluva Air T) protects wherever people congregate in small spaces - for example, at meetings, medical and other services close to the body, or private gatherings. It provides additional safety in addition to the applicable hygiene regulations. UVIS Air works best when it is placed on the table between the people present. If a larger room with many people present is to be disinfected, several UVIS Air units can be set up or a larger unit should be used. If you are interested, please feel free to contact our sales colleagues at info@uv-is.com or use our contact form.
